abstract | 1326015 Hydrogenating unsaturated compounds JOHNSON MATTHEY & CO Ltd 6 July 1970 [14 July 1969] 15295/73 Divided out of 1326012 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Olefinically or acetylenically unsaturated compounds are hydrogenated using as catalyst a composition prepared by adding a stabilizing donor ligand to a solution containing a strong acid and any of M 2 <SP>4+</SP>, M 2 (O 2 CR)<SP>n+</SP> -n , M 2 (OCS.R)<SP>n+</SP> 4-n and M 2 (S 2 CR)<SP>n+</SP> 4-n , wherein n is 1, 2, 3 or 4, M is a transition metal and R is alkyl or aryl and may be substituted. Stabilizing donor ligands are defined as organic isocyanides; other organic compounds, other than alcohols, having in the molecule an atom of an element of Group VB or VIB in a valency state such that it possesses a lone pair of electrons; or a stannous or germanium II halide. In examples, allyl phenyl ether, diethyl maleate, maleic acid, 3-methylbut- 1-yn-3-ol, propargyl alcohol and acetylenedicarboxylic acid are hydrogenated. |
