abstract | 1325586 Tunnel furnaces MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 21 Oct 1970 [21 Oct 1969] 50048/70 Heading F4B Pre-shaped bodies 48, Fig. 3, mounted in die assembles 12 carried on roller mounted supports 13, are sintered and hot pressed whilst passing through a tunnel furnace 10 including one or more presses 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, within its firebrick lined heating chambers 21. The temperature in each heating chamber 21 is independently controllable, and the length of each chamber is the same as the length of each support. A ram 15 moves an abutting line of supports intermittently through the chambers, each stroke of the ram being equal to or an integral multiple of the length of a chamber. Rail means 33 allow the presses to be moved from one chamber to another. Each press has a fixed upper ram 20, 20<SP>1</SP> and a retractable lower ram which on actuation urges upwardly movable plunger assembly blocks 39, 40, see Fig. 3, carried by that support 13 positioned above it, which in turn urge the punches 38, 44 of its associated die assembly 12 against the pre-shaped body 48 which is surrounded by inert alumina or zirconia powder. Each block 40 is made of heat resistant steel and each block 39 of silicon carbide, silicon nitride, mixtures thereof, or alumina. The die 43, punches 38, 44 and other die assembly parts 45, 47 are also made of this or of zirconia. The preshaped bodies may be of ferromagnetic or ferroelectric materials such as ferrites, barium titanate or lead-zirconate titanate. Specific values of the furnace and press operating conditions and the die dimensions are quoted. |
