titleOfInvention | Chlorination or sulphochlorination of polymers |
abstract | 1325579 Chlorinating and chlorosulphonating polymers BASF WYANDOTTE CORP 1 Dec 1970 [21 Jan 1970 (2)] 57136/70 Heading C3P Polyolefins and chlorinated polyolefins are chlorinated or chlorosulphonated by reacting with chlorine, alone or with sulphur dioxide, or with sulphuryl chloride in the presence of a catalyst in a two-phase slurry system containing a fluorocarbon medium in which the concentration of the insoluble part of the total amount of polymer in fluorocarbon is 1 to 35 weight per cent. Specified polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, ethylene/propylene copolymers and chlorinated polyethylene. The catalyst may be light, heat or a free radical initiator such as a peroxide or azo compound. Preferred fluorocarbons have 1 to 4 carbon atoms and 4 to 10 h alogen atoms at least one of which is fluorine. Examples describe the chlorination of (I and II) polyethylene, (X and XI) polypropylene in 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane, and of polyethylene in (III and IV) trichlorofluoromethane, (V) 1,1,2,2-tetrachloro-1,2-difluoroethane, (VI) 1,2-dichloro-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane, (VII) trichlorotrifluoroethane and trichlorofluoromethane, (VIII) 1,2-dibromo-1,1- 2,2-tetrafluoroethane and (IX) dichlorodifluoroethane; and the chlorosulphonation of (XIIXIV) polyethylene, (XVIII) polypropylene and (XIX) chlorinated polyethylene in trichlorotrifluoroethane, and of polyethylene in (XV) trichlorofluoromethane and (XVI and XVII) dichlorodifluoromethane. The products may be compounded with fillers, e.g. carbon black, and cured by heating with metal oxides, eg magnesium, zinc, lead or calcium oxides. |
