titleOfInvention Alkylating aromatic hydrocarbons with long chain olefinic compounds
abstract 1325281 Alkylating aromatic hydrocarbons CONTINENTAL OIL CO 13 Jan 1972 [2 April 1971] 1680/72 Heading C5E Monocyclic arene compounds are alkylated with one or more C 20 -C 36 olefinic compounds in the presence of a catalyst consisting of nitromethane and AlCl 3 . The alkylation may be carried out at 25-80‹ C., and the product mixture may be fractionated, the desired heavy alkylate fraction boiling above 335‹ C. The olefinic compounds are preferably dimers of tetrapropylene. The dimerization of tetrapropylene may be effected at 20-50‹ C. using SiO 2 - Al 2 O 3 or a Lewis or Bronsted acid catalyst, preferably the nitromethane-AlCl 3 alkylation catalyst. Examples describe the alkylation of benzene with tetrapropylene dimers using catalysts consisting of nitromethane and AlCl 3 in ratios varying from 1 : 3 to 2 : 1.
