abstract 1324950 Coated wire GTE SYLVANIA Inc 17 Dec 1971 [17 Dec 1970] 58789/71 Addition to 1268326 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C7 and G2] An anvil wire for the primer of a percussive flash-bulb is provided with a coating of fulminating material intermediate its ends by a process which includes the steps of applying to the wire a coating of fulminating material which extends part way along the wire from one end, drying the coating, dipping a predetermined length of the coated end of the wire into an electrolytic bath containing a colloidal thixotropic agent, and removing the unwanted immersed end portion of the coating by electrolysis. The fulminating material may consist of a mixture of red phosphorus, potassium chlorate or sodium chlorate, and powdered zirconium, and the bath is composed basically of water which contains a salt such as potassium chlorate, potassium chloride or sodium sulphate, an alkaline cleaner such as ammonium bicarbonate or trisodium phosphate, a wetting agent, an anti-foaming agent, and the colloidal thixotropic agent which may be colloidal silicon dioxide, aluminium oxide or, preferably, magnesium montmorillonite. The thixotropic agent may comprise between 0.1% and 10% by weight of the bath. The bath is maintained at a temperature of 50‹C, and A.C. or D.C. may be used.
