titleOfInvention Copolyester resins prepared from sulphophenoxy malomate compounds
abstract 1324811 Sulphophenoxymalonic acid derivatives FMC CORP 28 July 1970 [17 Oct 1969 15 May 1970] 36566/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises sulphophenoxymalonic acids and their esters, of formula where R 1 and R 2 are each H or C 1 to C 4 alkyl, R 3 is hydrogen or C 1 to C 6 alkyl and M is a metal of valency n. They may be produced by reaction between a dimetallic salt of p-hydroxylbenzenesulphonic acid and a dialkyl ester of a 2-halo-2- alkyl malonate. The resulting diester is saponified by conventional procedures if the diacid is required. The dimetallic salt used as starting material is prepared by titration of aqueous phydroxybenzenesulphonic acid with, for example, an alkali or alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide and evaporation to dryness. The preparation of the sodium salt of diethyl 2- methyl-(p-sulphophenoxy)malonate is described in detail. The product may be used in the preparation of copolyesters (see Division C3).
