abstract | 1324623 Reactor for sulfoxidation TEXACO TRINIDAD Inc 21 May 1971 [26 May 1970 17 Nov 1970 18 Nov 1970] 16237/71 Heading B1X [Also in Division C2] An apparatus, specifically for producing sulfonic acids from liquid hydrocarbons by treatment with O 2 and SO 2 , consists of a reactor container 10 (e.g. made of stainless steel, aluminium or glass) and cover plate 20 which form a completely enclosed mixing chamber when bolted together by bolts 34 accommodated by threaded openings 30 to flanged top 18. Container 10 may have diametrically opposed fins (not shown) extending half to ¥ the length of wall 12 but short of bottom 16. In sealed relationship with plate 20 is an externally threaded boss 36 surmounting opening 38 which allows passage of stirrer shaft 40 which carries turbine impeller 46. A flanged cap 42 screwed on boss 36 secures in place asbestos/ graphite packed gland 44 to support shaft 40. Cooling coil 48 (of e.g. stainless steel) surrounds shaft 40. Cover plate 20 has gas outlet 21 and liquid inlet 23, and bottom 16 has a gas inlet (not shown) and a product outlet 56. A thermocouple 60 (connected to a temperature recorder) may also be provided. |
