titleOfInvention Radiation installation for medical use
abstract 1324033 Irradiation apparatus LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS - GmbH 25 Sept 1970 [26 Sept 1969] 45769/70 Heading H5R In irradiation apparatus for therapeutic use, particularly for neutron irradiation; the collimator 10 of jointed construction and the patient support table 27 are simultaneously rotatable about the neutron source while the table surface is maintained horizontal, Fig. 2, to permit irradiation of a desired point in the patient from different directions, and the collimator, the table, and portion 5 of the shield, are together retractable from portion 4 of the shield, to facilitate access to the neutron source. As shown, the member 3 in which the collimator is formed has stepped interfaces 6 with the shielding portions 4 and 5, to reduce the escape of stray radiation, and is rigidly secured to the shaft 7 which is mounted in bearings 9 and 5 rotatable with respect to portion 5 by motor 15. Also secured to shaft 7 is a ring 20 mounted at the end of an arm 18, the table 27 being secured to an inner ring 21 which is rotatable within the ring 20. The table is also adjustable for height and may be pivoted about the vertical axis 29. The complete apparatus is supported from the roof girder 34, the shaft 7 together with the portions 3 and 5 and the table 27 being displaceable away from portion 4 in which an ion accelerator tube 1 having a tritium target is mounted. Portions 3, 4 and 5 are composed of steel layers a and c sandwiching between them a polyethylene layer b, layers b and c also incorporating boron. The apparatus includes a neutron dose measuring device 16 for switching off the ion accelerator tube upon the attainment of a predetermined neutron dose, and an optical simulator system 12. The collimator is provided with interchangeable diaphragm holders 11.
