titleOfInvention Capsule for irradiating samples with neutrons from a nuclear reactor
abstract 1322448 Nuclear reactors COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 5 Oct 1971 [9 Oct 1970] 46277/71 Heading G6C In a container for neutron irradiation of an object within a nuclear reactor, the ratio of fast to thermal neutron radiation incident upon the object is adjustable. The fluid surrounding the object may be changed from one absorbent to thermal neutrons, e.g. helium 3, to one which is tranparent to thermal neutrons, e.g. NaK liquid. As shown, a fuel element 1 is disposed within the containers 2, 8, placed in a reactor core, and the thermal neutron flux is controlled by movement of the helium 3-NaK interface in the annular space between containers 2 and 8. Container 22 is attached to the lower part of container 8 and encloses metal bellows 15, 16, 17 filled with NaK. Normal helium introduced through tubes 24 compresses the bellows and raises NaK into the annular space. The ratio of fast to thermal neutrons may also be altered by changing the pressure of the helium 3.
