abstract | 1320387 Hydroxyaldehydes BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 13 Nov 1970 [14 Nov 1969] 54103/70 Addition to 1273616 Heading C2C #-Hydroxyaldehydes of formula where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic radicals or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> may complete a ring, but R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are not both methyl, are prepared by reacting formaldehyde with an aldehyde of formula at elevated temperature in the presence of a tertiary amino group containing material and in the presence of water, the molar ratio of formaldehyde to aldehyde (II) being 0À5 to 1À5. Examples prepare 2-methyl-2-n-propyl-3-hydroxypropanol, 2 - ethyl - 2 - n - butyl - 3 - hydroxypropanol, and 1 - (hydroxymethyl)- hexahydrobenzaldehyde. Other specified aldehydes (II) are 2-ethylpentanol; 2-butyloctanol; 2-isopropylbutanol; 2-phenylpropanol; 2-(α- naphthyl) - propanol; 2 - (4 - chlorophenyl)- propanol; 2 - cyclohexylpropanol; cyclopentyl, cyclooctyl and cyclodecyl aldehydes; 2,3-diphenylpropanol; 2-cyclohexylbutanol; 2-pyridylpropionaldehydes; 2-furylpropionaldehydes and 2-N-methylpiperidylaldehydes. |
