titleOfInvention Basic polyamides
abstract 1320172 Polyamide-polyolefin filaments MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 1 Oct 1970 [1 Oct 1969 2 Oct 1969] 46679/70 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Fibres are formed from a thermoplastic composition which comprises by wt. 1-25% basic polyamide (P) and 99-75% crystalline polyolefine (Q). Polyamide (P) comprises units where n and m are each 1-99; R is H, alkyl, aryl, or cycloalkyl ; X is aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic, or heterocyclic, and may contain secondary or tertiary amine groups or O, S or P atoms; alternatively X, together with one or more of the R's and N's of each unit, forms or comprises a heterocyclic ring; A is Y is H or alkyl; and R<SP>1</SP> is a C# 30 aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, or aromatic radical. Polyolefine (Q) may be isotactic polypropylene or an ethylene-propylene copolymer comprising a major proportion of propylene units; or it may be polybutene-1, poly-4-methylpentene-1, or polystyrene. The mixing of (P) and (Q) may be performed by mixing as powders, or as solutions, or by adding (P) during or at the end of the polymerization of (Q); or by mixing the non- polycondensed reaction-products of the (P)- forming reactants with (Q), and allowing polycondensation to take place during granulating and spinning. The composition may be meltspun, stretched, e.g. in steam at a 1 : 5 draw ratio and stabilized. Before or after stretching, the filaments may be treated to render (P) completely water-insoluble, e.g. with mono- or di-epoxides, -isocyanates, or -aldehydes, or with halogens or divinylbenzene.
