titleOfInvention Phosphite esters of hindered phenols
abstract 1320169 Phosphite esters of hindered phenols ASHLAND OIL Inc 16 June 1970 [16 June 1969] 29213/70 Heading C2P [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises a phosphite ester in which at least one of the available bonds on the phosphorus atom is connected to a bisphenol through the oxygen remaining after the removal of the hydrogen of a phenolic hydroxyl group, the bisphenol being a hindered bisphenol with the phenolic rings bridged through a C 1-8 aliphatic hydrocarbon linkage, and with a hydroxyl group on each ring being ortho or para to the linkage, and with all of the positions ortho and para to the hydroxyl group on each ring substituted, the substituents ortho to the hydroxyl group on each ring being hydrocarbons, and in which all the available bonds on the phosphorus atom not connected to a hindered bisphenol are connected through the oxygen remaining after removal of the hydrogen of the phenolic hydroxyl groups to a compound which is a hydroxy-substituted phenol or a phenol with at least two of the positions ortho and para to the hydroxyl group on each ring substituted. The substituent para to the hydroxyl group in each ring of the hindered bisphenol may be hydrocarbyl, halogen, NO 2 , -SR<SP>111</SP>, -OR<SP>111</SP>, -COOR<SP>111</SP>, -NR<SP>111</SP>R<SP>111</SP>, -NHOH, -NHR<SP>IV</SP>NH 2 or -NHR<SP>IV</SP>OH, where R<SP>111</SP> is hydrocarbyl and R<SP>IV</SP> is C 1-22 alkylene, The phosphite esters, which may be used as antioxidants in polymeric materials, may be prepared by reacting one mole of a phosphite ester-forming phosphorus compound, such as a phosphorus trihalide, with at least one mole of a hindered bisphenol as defined above and optionally with a further phenol as defined above.
