titleOfInvention Process for increasing the viscosity of aqueous solutions dispersions or emulsions of film forming agents
abstract 1319654 Photographic coating compositions AGFA-GEVAERT A G 13 July 1970 [23 July 1969] 33807/70 Heading G2C [Also in Division C3] Photographic coating compositions contain as an agent for increasing their viscosity, a polymer of definically unsaturated monomers of molecular weight at least 15, 000 and containing at least 40 mole % of polymerized units of an N-Sulphophenyl maleic imide. The sulpho-containing imide units are preferably present in a weakly acid, or neutralized form. Specified film-forming agents are gelatine, and polyvinyl alcohol or derivatives thereof. The polymer is preferably a copolymer of 50 mole% of an N-sulphophenyl moleic imide with ethylene, isobutylene and/or styrene in which the aromatic ring may be sulphosubstituted and may be added to the film-forming composition in the form of an aqueous solution containing 5 to 40 per cent by weight of the polymer. The final modified composition preferably contains between 0À5 and 30% by weight of the polymer, based on the dry weight of the film-forming material. Examples are given of the preparation by imidation of various N-sulphophenyl maleic imide copolymers with styrene, ethylene, and isobutylene, and their uses in film-forming composition where the film-forming material is gelatine or acetalised polyvinyl alcohol. Examples 2, 3, 4 and 6 relate to the treatment of photographic gelatine emulsions containing colloidal silver, green sensitized AgBr, AgBr and red sensitized AgBr respectively.
