titleOfInvention Process for preparing methylterephthalic and methylisophthalic acids
abstract 1319021 Methyl-tere- and iso-phthalic acids TEIJIN Ltd 30 April 1971 [1 May 1970] 12545/71 Heading C2C A process for preparing methyl terephthalic acid and 4-methyl-isophthalic acid comprises oxidizing pseudocumene in 3 to 25 parts by weight per part by weight of pseudocumene, of acetic acid as solvent, with molecular oxygen under an oxygen partial pressure of not less than 0À2 atmosphere at a reaction temperature (T‹ C.) of 100 to 220‹C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising a cobalt compound, bromine or a bromine compound and optionally a manganese compound, the atomic ratio of manganese in the manganese compound (if present) to cobalt in the cobalt compound being not more than 4 : 1, the manganese in the manganese compound having the same valency as the cobalt in the cobalt compound and the cobalt, bromine and manganese compounds being all soluble in acetic acid under the oxidation conditions, the amount of catalyst being defined by the following equations wherein A is the ratio of the weight of cobalt in the cobalt compound, or the total weight of the cobalt in the cobalt compound and the manganese in the manganese compound, to the total weight of the pseudocumene and the acetic acid and B is the ratio of the gram-atoms of bromine or bromine in the bromine compound to the gram-atoms of the cobalt in the cobalt compound or the combined gram-atoms of the cobalt in the cobalt compound and the manganese in the manganese compound. Examples are furnished.
