titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of carbonyl and or alcoholic compounds
abstract 1317304 Carbonyl compounds and alcohols VYSKUMNY USTAV PRE PETROCHEMIU 22 June 1970 [25 July 1969] 30102/70 Heading C2C A method of preparing an organic carbonyl compound and/or an alcohol comprises contacting a heated organic carbonyl compound, having a lower molecular weight than the desired product, in admixture with hydrogen, an inert gas or a mixture thereof, with a layered catalyst bed having at least two different layers, one of the said layers being capable of promoting aldolization, dehydration and hydrogenation or alternatively being capable of promoting aldolization and dehydration, and another layer consisting of a catalyst containing a metal selected from rhodium, ruthenium, nickel, and copper, or an oxide of the said metal with the optional inclusion of magnesium or chromium oxide, the said catalyst being capable of promoting hydrogenation or alternatively hydrogenation and condensation. Preferably, the lower organic carbonyl compound is in the vapour state and the contacting is effected at a temperature of from 150‹ to 450‹ C. and at elevated pressure. Preferably, the catalyst capable of promoting aldolization, dehydration and hydrogenation or alternatively being capable of promoting aldolization and dehydration, comprises a mixture of two or more oxides selected from the oxides of calcium, magnesium, barium, zinc, iron, and chromium. The catalyst bed may include a layer of inactive granular material in front of the catalyst layers in the direction of the flow of the gas stream. In examples: acetone is converted to isopropanol, methylisobutylketone, mesityloxide, methylisobutylcarbinol phorone and diisobutylketone; and acetaldehyde to n-butyraldehyde, crotonaldehyde and ethanol.
