titleOfInvention Balance for weighing and agitating a blood bag
abstract 1316386 Collecting blood LABAZ 19 April 1971 [20 April 1970] 26345/71 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions B1 and G1] A balance for weighing and agitating a blood bag 60 comprises a beam 12 pivoted at 16 on a frame 11, a weighing counterweight 20 adjustably mounted on the beam one one side of the pivot 16 and a pan 40 on the other side of the pivot 16 carried by an arm 35 pivoted at 36 on the beam 12 and rocked by a drive unit 30 carried by the beam. A micro-motor 30 is arranged to rock the arm 35 through a crank assembly 32, 33 and the pan 40 has a hook 41 to which the bag 60 is attached. The bag 60 contains an anticoagulant and is connected to a venous puncture needle by a filling tube 61 passing through a support 52. The beam 12 comprises a rod 14 on which the counter weight 20 can slide to and from a stop 21 set to the predetermined weight of blood required after setting a tare weight 45 on a parallel rod 42 to compensate for the bag and coagulant. When an electricity supply is switched on a green lamp 50 lights up and the motor 30 starts up, e.g. at 10 r.p.m. When the required weight is reached, an abutment member 19 nips the tube 61 to stop the flow and a control finger 17 actuates a micro switch 18 to stop the motor 30 and lights up a red lamp 51, which may be associated with a warning bell. To increase the nip, as the beam 12 tilts, the counter weight 20 slides down towards the pivot of the beam, formed by a pin 16 in a block 14 which carries the abutment 19. In another embodiment, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown) the abutment 19 may be slidably mounted in the frame and spring-urged towards the tube 61 but held clear thereof by a trigger mechanism released by a corner of the block 14 when the beam tilts at the required weight. In yet another, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown) the abutment is carried by the armature of an electromagnet operated when the micro switch 18 is actuated at the required weight. In these embodiments the counterweight 20 need not slide but may be fastened to the stop 21.
