abstract | 1314539 Paper-making BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA FABRIK AG 25 Sept 1970 [27 Sept 1969] 45791/70 Heading D2B [Also in Division C3] In the production of paper from paper pulp there is used as a dewatering agent a copolymer comprising (a) 10-30% molar of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid units, (b) 30-50% molar of units of a basic comonomer of the formula where R<SP>1</SP> is H or methyl, R<SP>2</SP> is C 2 -C 6 alkylene, R<SP>3</SP> is C 1 -C 4 alkyl, R<SP>4</SP> is C 1 -C 4 alkyl and X is 0 or NH, (c) 20-60% molar of acrylamide and/or methacrylamide units and (d) 0-40% molar of units of a C 1 -C 8 alkyl acrylate and/or methacrylate and/or another neutral comonomer. Suitable other comonomers (d) include styrene, chlorostyrene, α-methylstyrene, vinyl C 1 -C 4 -alkyl ether and N-vinyl lactams, e.g. N- vinyl pyrrolidone. Before use aqueous solutions of the copolymer are preferably adjusted to pH 4-6. Dilute polymer solutions are continuously added to the pulp just before the breast box. The amount of copolymer used is suitably from 0.005-0.5% based on the weight of dry pulp. The copolymers also serve as retention aids. |
