titleOfInvention | Bituminous products containing polyurethanes |
abstract | 1314352 Bituminous composition NAPHTACHIMIE 28 Oct 1970 [29 Oct 1969] 51251/70 Heading C3N. A thermoplastic bituminous product comprises a petroleum bitumen and a quantity of polyurethane not exceeding 5% by weight, preferably 0À5-4% by weight, the polyurethane being made from a polyhydroxy compound containing more than four hydroxy groups in the molecule or two or more polyhydroxy compounds of which at least one contains more than four hydroxy groups in the molecule and an organic polyisocyanate. The polyurethane components are incorporated into a previously fluidized petroleum bitumen. The polyhydroxy compound preferably contains 5-8 hydroxyl groups per molecule, e.g. polyether polyols prepared by condensing sorbitol or sucrose with an alkylene oxide. The organic polyisocyanate is preferably an aromatic polyisocyanate, e.g. toluene diisocyanate, diphenylmethane diisocyanate or polymethylene polyphenylisocyanate. The number of isocyanate groups present in the organic isocyanate to the total number of hydroxy groups present in the polyhydroxy compound may be 1 : 1 to 2 : 1, e.g. 1À1 : 1. The polyhydroxy compound and polyisocyanate may be introduced into the bitumen simultaneously or alternatively they may be introduced separately, e.g. the polyhydroxy compound added first and then subsequently the polyisocyanate to the intermediate product. Alternatively before the polyhydroxy compound and the organic polyisocyanate are incorporated into the bitumen, all of the polyisocyanate is reacted with a portion of the polyhydroxy compound to produce a pre-polymer, the pre-polymer being incorporated into the bitumen before the remainder of the polyhydroxy compound. Suitable bitumens employed are direct distillation bitumens and oxidized bitumens. Fillers such as chalk, silica, dolomite, talc and kaolin, and polyurethane cross-linking catalysts such as dibutyl tin laurate may also be incorporated. The product of the invention finds particular application in road surfacing. |
