abstract 1313659 Pharmaceutical compositions containing steroids GLAXO LABORATORIES Ltd 13 July 1970 [25 July 1969] 37612/69 Heading ASB [Also in Division C2] Pharmaceutical and veterinary compositions comprise steroids possessing progestational, anti-estrogenic and anti-androgenic activity and having the formula: (wherein #<SP>6</SP> is optional, R<SP>1</SP> is H or halogen, R<SP>2</SP> is H, OH or C 1-6 alkoxy or acyloxy, R<SP>3</SP> is H, halogen or C 1-6 alkylthio, or R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> together are alkylidenedioxy or aralkylidenedioxy, and R<SP>4</SP> is H, F, Cl or CH 3 , but R<SP>1</SP> is not H unless (a) R<SP>2</SP> is formyloxy or alkoxy, or (b) R<SP>3</SP> is halogen or alkylthio, or (c) R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> together are alkylidenedioxy or aralkylidenedioxy or (d) R<SP>4</SP> is F or CH 3 ) or 3, 5- dienol ethers or esters thereof, together with carriers or excipients and/or one or more estrogenic hormones e.g. ethynyl-estradiol. They may be used as oral contraceptive agents and in the treatment of such conditions as dysmenorrhoea, functional uterine bleeding, premenstrual tension, diagnosis of pregnancy, endometriosis and threatened or habitual abortion. Oral and rectal dosage forms implants, and injection preparations are described.
