titleOfInvention Method and apparatus of a continuous polymerization
abstract 1313592 Mixing flowing streams; polymerisation apparatus TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 28 April 1970 [10 May 1969 (2) 16 May 1969 4 July 1969 11 Nov 1969 17 Dec 1969 18 Dec 1969] 20242/70 Headings B1C and B1X [Also in Division C3J Apparatus for effecting polyamide polymerization comprises a cylindrical column 2 with means for interchanging and amalgamating the flows in axial and peripheral zones. The column is heated at 4 and cooled at 6; it is stated that ring opening and addition polymerization occur in the upper part of the column and condensation polymerization in the lower part. As shown in Fig. 1, the central flow is collected by a funnel 11 and transferred by a gear pump 13 to a peripheral distributing ring (see also Figs. 2 and 3, not shown). The peripheral flow being brought to the axis by displacement. The collection and distribution arrangement may be inverted so that the ring collects the perhipheral flow and the funnel discharges it axially (see Fig. 4, not shown). In another arrangement, Fig. 6, pairs of inverted conical baffles 61 are arranged on a rod 62, axial flow being received on the inside of the inner cone and transferred by tubes 66 to the outside of the outer cone, the peripheral flow being guided between the cones to the axis. Other arrangements may comprise tubes (74) between annular rings (72, 73) leading from periphery to axis and vice versa (see Figs. 8 and 9, not shown), or a cylinder 91 divided into upper and lower chambers by a horizontal partition 92, the peripheral flow above a sinuous baffle 93 being conducted by perforations 96 to the lower chamber while the flow into the upper chamber is guided out below the baffle. In the hydrolytic polymerization of e-caprolactam, the upper part of the column is maintained at 250-350‹C and the lower part at 230-270‹C. In examples, there was a reduced temperature difference when the polymer flow transposition arrangement was included in the column, with reduction in the percentage monomer and oligomer content of the product and in its viscosity variation.
