titleOfInvention | Apparatus for measuring the content of alcohol |
abstract | 1312545 Ionization gas detectors TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO Ltd 14 July 1971 33091/71 Heading G1N In a device for determining the alcohol content of a person's breath, an alcohol adsorbent 7 which has been exposed to such breath is heated within a tube 13 to vapourize the moisture and alcohol and dehydrogenate such vapour, the hydrogen being conveyed via a hydrogen filter 12 to a vacuum vessel 11, which as shown is a triode but may be an ion pump, Fig. 5 (not shown), or a diode, Fig. 6 (not shown). The adsorbent 7 is contained within a tube 3 which can be attached at one end to a balloon into which the person has blown, and at the other end to a pump so that a predetermined amount of breath can be drawn through the adsorbent 7, Fig. 1 (not shown). Heating is provided by a wire 14, the hydrogen filter being formed of a metal which also acts as a catalyst, e.g. palladium, zirconium, nickel or alloys thereof. Alternatively, coiled or plate filters may be used, a separate catalyst such as copper mesh being employed. The adsorbent 7 and tube 3, in another construction, are arranged in a branch tube leading from the tube 13, the branch tube being surrounded by its own heating wire, Fig. 4 (not shown). Suitable adsorbents include silica gel, activated carbon, molecular sieve or activated alumina. |
