As illustrated, a plurality of elements is formed by fins 7 provided with holes 8 which are so arranged that the set of fins is optically opaque in the vertical direction. In alternative arrangements (not shown), auxiliary heat exchange elements may be formed by helical flights or a single element may be formed by a sintered metal body.
