titleOfInvention Biodegradable sulphonate and sulphate detergent compositions
abstract 1311245 Sulphonates and sulphates COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DE RAFFINAGE 19 April 1971 [16 Feb 1970] 24207/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Biodegradable detergent materials are prepared from the mixture comprising olefines and aromatic hydrocarbons obtained by a non- isomerizing catalytic dehydrogenation of a mixture of C 14-24 normal paraffins, by eliminating the hydrogen and, optionally, cracking products and then either (1) sulphonating with gaseous SO 3 and neutralizing and hydrolysing the products to give a mixture of alkali metal or ammonium orthodialkylbenzene sulphonates, alkenyl sulphonates and hydroxyalkyl sulphonates, the hydroxyalkyl and alkenyl sulphonates being linear and each having 14 to 24 carbons and the alkyl radicals of the dialkylbenzene sulphonates being linear with 1 to 18 carbons each (claimed per se) or (2) sulphating at least a part of the olefines in the mixture with cone. H 2 SO 4 , neutralizing and hydrolysing to give alkali metal or ammonium C 14-24 linear alkyl sulphates, and then separating and optionally sulphonating the remaining organic phase containing any of the remaining olefines and aromatic hydrocarbons to give a product as in (1). The mixture before sulphonation or sulphation may be treated with a molecular sieve to remove unreacted paraffins andtraces of naphthenes formed, which may be recycled to the dehydrogenation step.
