titleOfInvention Sulphonation of epoxides
abstract 1310672 Sulphonating epoxides ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 20 March 1970 [25 March 1969] 15617/69 Heading C2C Hydroxyalkane sulphonates are prepared by sulphonating epoxides of formula where R is alkyl or polyoxyethylene and R<SP>1</SP> is H or an R group using an organic carbonyl/ bisulphite adduct at an initial pH of 6-8 and at elevated temperature. The adduct may be prepared in situ by adding sodium sulphite, or a mixture thereof with sodium metabisulphite, to an aqueous carbonyl compound, either before or after addition of the epoxide. An example prepares sodium lauryloxy-hydroxypropanesulphonate from lauryl glycidyl ether.
