abstract | 1310502 Refractory bricks STEETLEY REFRACTORY BRICK CO Ltd 7 April 1970 [18 April 1969] 20015/69 Heading F4B [Also in Division C1] Tar- or pitch-containing basic refractory shapes are treated by heating in the presence of vapours of a catalyst and of vapours arising from the heating of the tar or pitch-containing shapes. Suitable shapes are bricks formed from dead burned or fused magnesia lime and/or dolomite either by using a-tar or pitch bond or by impregnating the shape with tar or pitch. Suitable catalysts are nitrobenzene, m-dinitrobenzene, nitrotoluene, dinitrotoluene, trinitrotoluene, dinitronaphthalene, ammonium persulphate, potassium permanganate, potassium dichromate, sodium nitrate, aluminium chloride, zinc chloride, ferric chloride, furfuryl aldehyde, p-toluene sulphonyl chloride and nitric acid. The treatment is carried out at 150-1000 C. and can be followed by impregnating with tar or pitch and heating at 175-1000 C. and then by another impregnation and heating at 400-1000 C. The treated brick can be fired before use, e.g. whilst embedded in carbon, or during service, e.g. as part of a furnace structure. |
