titleOfInvention | Method of and apparatus for preparing a sample of crumbled soil for use in ascertaining the rolling limit of soil samples |
abstract | 1307901 Moulding test specimens AMTLICHE FORSCHUNGS-UND MATERIAL-PRUFUNGSANSTALT FUR DAS BAUWESEN 26 Feb 1970 [26 Feb 1969] 9223/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for determining the rolling limit of soil samples, that is the point where a cylinder of soil rolled down to a particular diameter crumbles and loses its plasticity, comprises three vertically journalled and mutually inclined driven rollers 111, Fig. 1, receiving the soil from a hopper 115 so that the soil is rolled down from a diameter of hole 131 to the diameter of outlet hole 151. The roller inclinations are adjustable by rotating upper and lower plates providing bearings for the roller journals and a heater and air blower 170 is provided. The soil sample will normally be passed several times through the apparatus from top to bottom (being kneaded and replaced in the hopper at each pass) until crumbling of the rolled sample occurs to a specific height above but still within the outlet 159. This sample quantity is then conveyed to a measuring instrument which determines the water content and thereby the rolling limit. The roller speeds and the -drying blower can of course be varied and altered to assist crumbling. In Fig. 4 the sample is rolled between grooved sets of rollers 211, 221 at 90 degrees to one another. The crumbling area or the position where crumbling occurs can be readily adjusted by varying the spacing of the roller sets and the drying air flow. In other embodiments, e.g., Figs. 9-12 (not shown), some of which do not employ a dryer, the soil sample is passed between the inner surface of a hollow drum and a series of rotating rollers or the sample is passed between shaped spring pressed presser plates and a conveyer belt passing around a pair of rollers, Figs. 11-16 (not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 17 (not shown), the sample is pressed between two conveyer belts. In yet another embodiment, Figs. 18-20 (not shown), the sample is pressed between two horizontal rotatable discs contoured to shape the sample. |
