abstract | 1307884 Fatty acids ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 4 May 1971 [7 May 1970 28 Aug 1970] 22165/70 and 41619/70 Heading C2C [Also in. Division C5E] Free fatty acids are recovered from glyceride oils by mixing the oil with a dilute aqueous solution of an alkali together with an alkalimetal, alkaline-earth-metal or ammonium salt of benzene-, toluene- or xylene-sulphonic acid, the concentration of sulphonate and its molar ratio to soap being such that the mixture comprises an oil phase and a homogeneous aqueous phase, and separating these phases. Oils that may be treated are vegetable and marine (e.g. herring) oils and animal oils, including tallows. The aqueous layer is acidified, the fatty acid recovered and the aqueous phase containing sulphonate recycled. Part of this aqueous phase may be used to dilute the acid for the acidification. |
