abstract | 1306935 Curable silicon-containing acrylate copolymers DOW CORNING Ltd 22 June 1970 [20 Jane 1969] 31295/69 Heading C3P A curable composition for sealing joints and cracks, comprises (A) a curable copolymer obtained by the addition copolymerization of (i) 100 molar proportions of one or more compounds of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is C 1-4 alkyl and (ii) from 0À08 to 0À8 molar proportions of a silane of general formula wherein Q is H or -CH 3 , X is a C 1-5 alkylene radical, Y is a C 1-5 alkoxy radical, Z is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon radical or a halogen atom, and n is 2 or 3, and (B) a silanol condensation catalyst. The composition cures on exposure to water, and may contain also a hydrolysable silane with a rate of hydrolysis greater than that of the -SiY n Z 3-n group of (ii) above, in order to keep the composition dry and therefore prevent it polymerizing such as Me-Si(OMe) 3 , MeSi(OEt) 3 , Me 2 Si(OMe) 2 and ethyl triacetoxy silane. Examples of silane monomers (ii) are given, wherein X is -(CH 2 ) 3 -, -CH 2 -, and and wherein Y is -OC 2 H 5 , -OCH 3 or -OC 4 H 9 and Z is Cl. The composition may also contain up to 40% by wt. of solvent and/or one or more fillers. Other vinyl monomers may also be polymerized with (i) and (ii). Examples of silanol condensation catalyst (B) are HCl, acetic and propionic acids, methylamine, octylamine, ethylenediamine, tetrabutyl titanate, tetranonyl titanate, triethanolamine titanate, di-(isopropoxy)-titanium di-(acetoacetonate) and di-(ethylacetoacetate), lead 2-ethylhexoate, lead naphthenate, Co octoate, zinc naphthenate, Fe octoate, stannous octoate and acetate, dibutyltin diacetate, dilaurate and dioctoate, and dioctyl tin di-2-ethyl hexoate. In the examples, the polymers A are of (1) ethyl acrylate and gamma triethoxysilyl-propylmethacrylate, (2) ethyl acrylate and gamma trimethoxy silylpropyl methacrylate, (3) ethyl acrylate, styrene and gamma trimethoxysilyl-propyl methacrylate, and (4) ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and gamma trimethoxy silyl-propyl methacrylate, and are cured with catalysts selected from those listed above. |
