titleOfInvention Method and apparatus for producing readout from gas or liquid chromatograph
abstract 1306534 Mass spectrometers FRANKLIN GNO CORP 4 March 1970 [1 April 1969(2) 27 May 1969 4 Aug 1969 13 Oct 1969 17 Dec 1969 20 Feb 1970] 10507/70 Heading H1D A method of producing a readout from a gas or liquid chromatograph comprises producing reactant ions, reacting said reactant ions with molecules of at least one component of the effluent from said chromatograph to produce secondary ions, subjecting said ions to a drift field, and detecting at least some of said secondary ions, the reacting and subjecting steps being carried out in a chamber, and the pressure in said chamber being maintained at a level sufficient to ensure that the mean free path of ions in said chamber is very small compared to the dimensions of said chamber and that said ions reach substantially constant massdependent terminal velocity in said field, the detecting step comprising subjecting said ions to mass analysis. In one arrangement, Fig. 4, a gas sample and a reactant gas such as O 2 or N 2 pass at approximately atmospheric pressure from an inlet 46 to an outlet 48 of a chamber 38 between two electrodes 42 and 44 providing a drift field. Electrode 42 has a layer of radioactive material, e.g. tritium or Ni63. Electrode 44 has an aperture 52 through which ions pass to a chamber 40 having an outlet 62 connected to a pump for maintaining a pressure of 10<SP>-4</SP> torr. or less and containing an ion lens 54, a quadrupole mass analyser 56 and an electron multiplier detector having an output electrode 60.- In a modified arrangement, Fig. 5, the gas sample from a tube 68 and reactant gas from a branch tube 70 pass into a chamber 38<SP>1</SP> through an inlet tube 46<SP>1</SP> containing an ionizer 66 to an aperture 64 in an electrode 42<SP>1</SP> maintained at a negative potential with respect to an electrode 44<SP>1</SP> having an aperture 52<SP>1</SP> communicating with a chamber 36<SP>1</SP> containing the spectrometer and mutliplier components shown in Fig. 4. Guard rings 76 are provided between two dual grid type ion gates 78 and 80. A non-reactive buffer gas may be passed through the chamber 38<SP>1</SP> from an inlet 72 to an outlet 74. Specification 1,274,634 is referred to.
