abstract 1304984 Coated sheet material JAPAN GAS-CHEMICAL CO Inc 19 April 1971 [16 Feb 1970] 21853/71 Heading B2E A process for producing paper-like film comprises coating a synthetic resin film with a solution in a water-compatible solvent, of a copolymer of (a) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a hydrophilic group and (b) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a hydrophobic group and drying the coated film at at least 10‹C. and at a relative humidity of at least 50% so that a whitened coating is formed. The comonomer of group (a) may be an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid such as acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic or vinyl acetic acids, anhydrides thereof such as maleic anhydride, amides of such acids such as acrylamide and methacrylamide, N-methylol amides of such acids such as N-methylol acrylamide and N-methylol methacrylamide, and hydroxy alkyl esters and amino alkyl esters of these acids such as betahydroxyethyl acrylate, and beta aminoethyl acrylate. Also suitable are methylvinyl ether, methylvinyl ketone, vinyl pyrrolidone, vinyl carbazole, vinyl imidazole, N-dialkyl vinyl amine, vinyl pyrridine and ar-vinylbenzylamine and its N-alkyl or N,N-dialkyl derivatives. The copolymer may be in the form of a salt obtained by reacting an acid or a quaternizing agent with the copolymer. The comonomer (b) may be an define, such as ethylene and butene, styrene and its derivatives, alkyl esters of unsaturated carboxylic acids such as methyl, ethyl, and propyl acrylates and methacrylates, vinyl halides such as vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride and vinyl fluoride, vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate, vinyl formate and vinyl propionate and other compounds such as acrylontrile, methacrylonitrile. Numerous preferred specific polymers are listed. The molecular weight is preferably such that 2-50 weight percent solution has a viscosity of 25‹C. of at least 50 centipoises. The substrate may be of polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyesters, polyamides or polycarbonates. The film may be stretched or unstretched and foamed films may be used. The surface may be treated by electric discharge or flame prior to coating and an undercoat may be applied. The copolymer solution may contain white pigments such as titanium dioxide, delusterants such as clay or colloidal silica, perfumes, stabilizers or plasticizers.
