abstract 1304904 Ethylene/polyene copolymers SNAM PROGETTI SpA 6 July 1970 [18 July 1969] 32748/70 Heading C3P Cross-linkable substantially crystalline copolymers formed only from (a) ethylene and (b) a minor proportion by weight of a polycyclic polyene having at least 3 carbon-carbon double bonds, may be prepared by copolymerizing the monomers in the presence of a catalyst comprising a Group IV to VIII transition metal compound and an aluminium compound of formula AlRX 1 X 2-n Z where R is H or C 1-20 hydrocarbyl, X 1 and X 2 are H, C 1-10 hydrocarbyl, halogen or secondary amine, Z is a Lewis base and n is 0 or 1, or a polyimino alane. Specified polyenes are dehydrodicyclopentadiene, 2 - methyl dehydrodicyclopentadiene, 4- or 5-methyl-2-cyolopentadienyl- 2<SP>1</SP> - norborn - 5<SP>1</SP> - enyl methane, 2 - cyclopentadienyl-2<SP>1</SP>-norborn - 5<SP>1</SP>-enyl methane, 2,6-diallyl dicyclopentadiene, 2 - allyl dicyclopentadiene, 1 - isopropylidene dicyclopentadiene, 1,4 dimethylene - 9,6 - endomethylene - 1,4,5,6,9,10- hexahydronaphthalene, 1,4 - dimethylene - 9,6- endomethylene - 1,2,3,4,5,6,9,10 - octahydronaphthalene, 2,3 - dimethylene norborn - 5- ene and 1 - isopropylidene - 3a,4,7,7a - tetrahydroindene. Examples describe the copolymerization of ethylene with (1) dehydrodicyclopentadiene, (2) 2-methyl dehydrodicyclopentadiene, 4- or 5 - methyl - 2 - cyclopentadienyl- 2<SP>1</SP> - norborn - 5<SP>1 </SP>- enyl methane, (5) 1 - isopropylidene dicyclopentadiene and (6) 2,6- diallyl dicyclopentadiene in the presence of vanadium tetrachloride and triethyl aluminium; ethylene with (3) 2-cyclopentadienyl-2- norborn-5<SP>1</SP>-enyl methane in the presence of vanadium tri(acetylacetonate); and ethylene with (7) 2-allyl dicyclopentadiene in the presence of vanadium oxytrichloride and ethyl aluminium sesquichloride; the copolymers being cross-linked by heating at 120‹ to 300‹ C.
