abstract 1304877 2 - [4<SP>1</SP> - (Benzoxazolyl - 2<SP>11</SP>)-styryl] 5-arylbenztriazoles. BAYER AG 3 Nov 1970 [3 Nov 1969] 52211/70 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] The invention comprises 2-[4<SP>1</SP>-(benzoxazolyl- 2<SP>11</SP>) - styryl] - 5 - aryl - benztriazoles of the general formula in which R 1 represents hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy or aryl and R 2 , R 3 and R 4 independently represent hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl or nitrile, or R 2 and R 3 conjointly form a sixmembered aromatic ring. They may be prepared by reacting a 2-p-carboxystyryl-5-phenylbenztriazole of the general formula in which Z is hydroxyl, halogen or alkoxy with an o-aminophenol of general formula and cyclizing the reaction product with a dehydrating agent or by reacting a 5-arylbenztriazolyl-2-acetic acid of general formula with a 2-(41-formylphenyl)-benzoxazole of the general formula in the presence of a condensation catalyst. The 2 - p - carboxy - styryl - 5 - phenylbenztriazole starting material may be prepared by reacting a 5 - phenylbenztriazolyl - 2 - acetic acid with 4 - carboxybenzaldehyde in the presence of piperidine. The compounds of the invention may be used as optical brightening agents.
