abstract 1304514 Aromatic sulphonic acids ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 27 April 1970 [25 April 1969 27 Oct 1969] 21330/69 and 52581/69 Heading C2C Aryl and (C 1 -C 4 ) alkylaryl sulphonic acids are obtained by reacting SO 3 with an aryl or (C 1 -C 4 ) alkylaryl compound in the presence of from 0À5 to 10% by weight based on the weight of the product of specified N-containing compounds. Specified N-containing compounds are pirmary, secondary and tertiery alkylamines (including cyclic amines), C 1 to C 18 alkylamides, alkylolamides, alkylolamines, EDTA or nitrilotriacetic acid and their salts, inorganic or organic ammonium salts, aromatic amines and fused polycyclic heterocyclic compounds containing a N-atom in one of the aromatic rings. Discoloration of the product may be avoided by replacing 40-60% of the N-containing compound by phosphoricacid. The amount of N-containing compound required may be reduced by using liquid SO 2 as solvent. The process may be operated as a batch or continuous process. Examples are given in which toluene is sulphonated.
