abstract 1303963 Olefine sulphonates MO OCH DOMSJO AB 19 April 1971 [23 Jan 1970] 20217/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] A freely flowing powder comprising an alkali metal salt of an α-olefin sulphonic acid is prepared by adding to a sulphonation product, which contains sultones and which has been obtained by sulphonation of an α-olefin mixture comprising 50-100% by weight linear α-olefins containing 10-24 carbon atoms and 0-50 % by weight of linear internal olefins containing 10-24 carbon atoms, an amount of alkali which is sufficient to neutralize both the alkene sulphonic acids present in the sulphonation product and the sulphonic acids which will be produced by hydrolysis of the sultones present in the sulphonation product, and then drying the resulting suspension and simultaneously hydrolysing the sultones with water added for the hydrolysis. Drying may be effected by hot rollers or spray drying.
