abstract 1303823 Esters RESOURCES RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CORP 29 Dec 1969 63047/69 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C5 E1 and F1] An alkane is reacted with a carboxylic acid in the presence of a liquid carrier for the reaction products by subjecting a mixture of the reactants and the carrier to energy having a frequency of at least 10 kes. per second. In one example butyl acetate is formed by reacting acetic acid and butane, mixed with a carrier, to ultrasonic energy at 28À3 kes per second at an intensity of 50 to 100 watts per square cm., and at 100 p.s.i. pressure, and a temperature of 572‹ F. Other reactants mentioned include polyethylene and polypropylene, and acids mentioned include butyric, acrylic, methacrylic, stearic, maleic, phthalic, glutaric, pimelic, succinic, sebacic, polyacrylic and polymethacrylic.
