abstract 1303588 Tertiaryalkyl cumyl peroxides PENNWALT CORP 19 April 1971 [25 Feb 1970] 21527/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein X is F, Cl or Br, R is H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aryl, the latter three groups optionally containing inert substituents; R 1 is a tertiary (C 4 -C 8 ) alkyl group attached to the -O- atom through a tertiary carbon atom and optionally containing inert substituents, and n is an integer from 1 to 5. They may be obtained by (1) the acid catalysed condensation of the appropriately substituted cumyl alcohol and t-alkyl hydroperoxide; (2) electrophilic halogenation of t-alkyl curnyl peroxide; (3) the transition metal-catalysed decomposition of t-alkyl hydroperoxide in the presence of an appropriately substituted cumene; and (4) the addition of t-alkyl hydroperoxide to an appropriately substituted α-methyl-styrene in the presence of a catalytic amount of a similarly substituted cumyl halide. Examples are given for the production of the compounds. They are useful as cross-linking and curing agents for polymers. Bromo- and chloro-cumyl alcohols may be obtained by the reaction of methyl magnesium bromide with the appropriately substituted bromo- or chloroacetophenone.
