abstract 1302771 Coating plastics film NISSHIN BOSEKI KK 3 July 1970 [11 July 1969 2 March 1970 8 June 1970] 32357/70 Heading B2E A process for producing coated plastic film, the film being soluble or swellable in dimethylformamide, comprises forming a solution of a resin which is soluble or swellable in dimethylformamide, a plasticizer for the resin, an inorganic fine powder and dimethylformamide, applying the composition as a coating to the film, treating the coated film with water to coagulate the composition and subjecting the coated film to heat treatment so as to soften the coating without thermal deformation of the film. Suitable films are vinyl polymer, or copolymer, a polycarbonate, 8-nylon or a cellulose plastic. Preferred films are of polystyrene, styrene-butadiene copolymer, styrenebutadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, styreneacrylonitrile copolymer, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinylidene cloride copolymer and a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and the film may be uniaxially or biaxially oriented or unoriented. Numerous suitable plasticizers are specified as well as inorganic powders, such as calcium carbonate, zinc oxide, kaolin and clay. The heat treatment may be effected with hot air, infra-red heating, roll heating or high frequency induction heating, or, preferably with hot water or steam. The hot water treatment may be conducted at any desired stage after the coating and it is preferred that this be effected just after the coating step since it also coagulates the surface. The coating composition may be of styrene homo- or copolymer, e.g. polystyrene and styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer. Application may be of roll, airknife or curtain coating.
