abstract 1302374 Aldehyde condensation products IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 June 1970 [15 July 1969] 35557/69 Heading C2C Condensation products are obtained by reacting, in the liquid phase, at least one aldehyde having four carbon atoms in the molecule in the presence of a catalytic amount of a compound, soluble in the aldehyde, of Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zr, Mo, Cd, Sn or W. Suitable compounds include carboxylates, complexes, alkoxides and inorganic polyacid salts. The catalyst may be recycled in a continuous process. The aldols initially formed may undergo further reaction. Examples prepare 2-ethylhexenal and monobutyrates of 2-ethyl-hexane-1,3-diol from n-butyraldehyde; 2-ethylhexenal and 2-ethylisohexenal from a mixture of n- and isobutyraldehydes; 2,4,6 - tri - isopropyl - 1,3,5- trioxane from isobutyraldehyde; monoisobutyrates of 2,2,4-trimethylpentan-1,3-diol from isobutyraldehyde; o- and p-tolualdehydes from crotonaldehyde; and a mixture containing butyric acid, 2-ethylhexanol, n-octanol, ptolualdehyde, p-methylbenzyl alcohol, hexahydro o- and p-methylbenzyl alcohols by hydrogenation of condensation products of crotonaldehyde.
