abstract 1301574 Cellular amine-cured aldehyde polymers WEYERHAEUSER CO 29 April 1970 [5 May 1969] 20627/70 Headings C3C and C3R A cellular resinous product is made by including a foaming agent in a liquid composition comprising (a) the reaction product of an aldehyde condensation polymer having reactive alkylol groups with an amine selected from (i) amines having the formula where: X 1 is -NH 2 or -CH 2 NH 2 ; X 2 is -X 1 , -OH, or -OCH 3 ; X 3 is -X 1 , -COOH, -NO 2 , -OCH 3 , -OH, -CH 3 , -NHCOCH 3 , -H or where A is -(CY 1 Y 2 )zwhere Y 1 and Y 2 are each selected from hydrogen and alkyl radicals having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and z is 0, 1 or 2, or is -O-, -SO 2 -, -NH-, -S-, -CH=CH- or -S-S-, and X 4 is C 1 to C 4 alkyl or hydrogen; (ii) bis-(aminoaryl) compounds of the formula where R and R<SP>1</SP> are each selected from alkoxy, amino, hydrogen, hydroxyl, nitro, carboxyl or or C 1 to C 4 alkyl and X has the same possibilities as A in (i); (iii) aminonaphthalenes of the formula where R is amino or is hydroxyl in the 2, 5 and 8 ring positions when the amine group is in the 1 position; and (iv) heterocyclicnitrogen-containing compounds selected from 2,3-, 2,4-, 2,6- or 3,4- diaminopyridine; pyrrole; N-methylpyrrole; 2,4-dimethylpyrrole; or 4,6-diaminopyrimidine; and (b) a curing agent comprising an aldehyde or a mixture of an aldehyde with an epoxide containing more than one epoxide group per molecule, and causing or allowing the composition to expand and set. The foaming agent may be a material which liberates carbon dioxide in the presence of acid, or an aliphatic hydrocarbon, ether or halogenated saturated hydrocarbon containing at least two halogen atoms of which at least one is fluorine, and which boil at a temperature below that produced by the exothermic reaction between the reaction product and the curing agent. In the examples polymers of phenol/formaldehyde (novolac and resole) and acetone/ formaldehyde were cured with m-hydroxyaniline or m-phenylenediamine and optionally an epoxide resin, the polymer mixtures contained asbestos and silica and were foamed with a mixture of hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate, or with trichlorofluoromethane.
