titleOfInvention Certain substituted 2-hydroxybenzo-phenoximes and the process of extracting copper therewith
abstract 1301169 Hydroxy benzophenoximes GENERAL MILLS Inc 1 Dec 1970 57082/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division C1] The invention comprises compounds of the formula where R and R<SP>1</SP> are each R<SP>11</SP> or OR<SP>11</SP> where R<SP>11</SP> is a saturated aliphatic group of 1-25 carbon atoms or an ethylenically unsaturated group of 3-25 carbon atoms, E is an electron withdrawing substituent, p is 1-4, m is 0 or an integer up to 4-p, n is 0-4, the compound having a total of at least 3 carbon atoms in R m and R<SP>1</SP> n , the electron withdrawing substituent substantially increasing the efficiency of the compound as a copper extractant from aqueous solutions having a pH less than about 1À0, wherein the compound is essentially insoluble in water and has both alone and in its copper complex a solubility of at least about 2% by weight in an essentially water-immiscible organic solvent. The compounds are prepared from the corresponding benzophenones by reaction with a hydroxylamine salt. The invention further comprises mixtures of the hydroxy benzophenoximes with compounds of the formula where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are organic radicals and R<SP>3</SP> is H or an organic radical, this oxime being essentially insoluble in water and having both alone and as its copper complex a solubility of at least 2% by weight in an essentially water-immiscible organic solvent.
