titleOfInvention Preparation of short oil alkyd resins
abstract 1300841 Short oil alkyd resins KANSAI PAINT CO Ltd 20 March 1910 [26 March 1969] 13626/70 Headings C3F and C3R The invention comprises a short oil alkyd resin which comprises the reaction product of polycarboxylic acid(s), glycol(s), tetrahydric and/or trihydric alcohol(s) and saturated and/or unsaturated fatty acid(s) having from 6 to 18 carbon atoms, in such proportions that the average number of hydroxy functional groups per polyol molecule falls within the numerical range expressed by a tetragon, the vertices of which are positioned at the co-ordinates (10 weight per cent, 2À25), (20 weight per cent 2À45), (10 wt. per cent, 2À55) and (20 wt. per cent, 2À75), the abscissa in the co-ordinate system indicating the wt. per cent, based on the total weight of the resin, of the fatty acids and the ordinate indicating the average number of functional groups. In the examples resins are prepared from (i) phthalic acid, adipic acid, trimethylolethane, neopentylglycol and coconut oil fatty acid, (ii) phthalic anhydride, trimethylolethane, neopentyl glycol and coconut oil fatty acid, (iii) phthalic anhydride, adipic acid, pentaerythritol, ethylene glycol and soyabean oil fatty acid, (iv) isophthalic acid, adipic acid, trimethylolethane, neopentylglycol and coconut oil fatty acid, (v) alkaline refined coconut oil, trimethylolpropane, neopentyl glycol, phthalic anhydride and adipic acid, (vi) phthalic acid, trimellitic acid, adipic acid, trimethylolethane, neopentylglycol and coconut oil fatty acid, the product being neutralized with diethanolamine, (vii)and (viii) phthalic anhydride, adipic acid, neopentyl glycol, trimethylolpropane and coconut oil fatty acid, and (ix) phthalic anhydride, neopentyl glycol, trimethylolpropane and soyabean oil fatty acid. Coating compositions are made by dissolving the resins of examples (i) to (v), (vii) and (viii) in an organic solvent (e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon or xylene/butanol) or the resin of example (vi) in water and possibly adding another polymer (e.g. a methylated or butylated melamine/formaldehyde resin, an acrylonitrile resin, nitrocellulolase or acetylbutylcellulose) or a pigment (e.g. titanium dioxide).
