titleOfInvention Polyurethane foam
abstract 1300476 Polyurethane foam JEFFERSON CHEMICAL CO Inc 7 Oct 1970 [10 Oct 1969] 47783/70 Heading C3R Polyurethane foams having an integral polyurethane skin may be prepared by reacting in the presence of a blowing agent and a catalyst for the reaction (a) a polymeric polyisocyanate of the formula wherein n has an average value of 0À2 to 1À5, and (b) a polyol component comprising (1) 75 to 90 weight per cent of a polyether having an equivalent weight of 1000 to 2300 and from 5 to 90% primary hydroxyl groups, and (2) 10 to 25 weight per cent ofN-(2-hydroxy-ethyl)- 2-hydroxyethylcarbamate, the overall isocyanate index being 1À05 to 1À45, the reaction being carried out in a closed mould filled with a quantity of reactants which if allowed to foam in the mould, when open, would at least fill the mould after foaming. Polyether triols are the preferred polyethers. Metallic salts and/or tertiary amines may be used as catalysts. The mould is suitably preheated before pouring in the reaction mixture. In a typical example a mixture is prepared of a polyether triol of M.W. 6500, 2-hydroxyethyl 2-hydroxyethyl carbamate, dibutyltindilaurate, trimethylaminoethylpiperazine, trichlorofluoromethane and a commercial polymeric polyisocyanate and poured into an aluminium mould preheated to 120‹ F. to form a foam having a good skin. Uses.-Moulded parts, e.g. crashpads, arm rests, A-posts and horn buttons for use in the automobile industries.
