abstract | 1297095 Grinding BELGONUCLEAIRE SA 3 May 1971 [6 May 1970] 12747/71 Heading B3D A method of machining fissile or fertile materials, such as fuel pellets 3 for nuclear reactors comprises cooling the material and/or the tool during machining with a liquified inert gas, i.e. a gas which does not react with either the material or the materials used in the machine or tool for carrying out the method. As described, the machining is effected by a centreless grinding machine comprising a ceramic abrasive wheel 1 and a driving wheel 2 of synthetic rubber rotating at 2000 r.p.m. and 80 r.p.m., respectively. The pellets 3 which may be uranium oxide or plutonium oxide are fed by a vibrating trough to a support 6 between the wheels and the coolant, such as liquid nitrogen or argon, is directed to the work and wheel by a nozzle 7 connected by a regulating valve 8 to a tank 9. An aspiration nozzle 10 is connected to a filter 11 and suction pump 12 for collecting the waste material. In other embodiments, the grinding wheel consists of diamonds embedded in thermo-setting material and the pellets may be fed by a mechanical pneumatic device. |
