abstract 1296278 Cleaning garments F W MEANS & CO 20 May 1970 [21 May 1969] 24448/70 Heading DIP A method of cleaning garments or textile fabrics comprises the steps of: (1) placing the garments in a cleaning container (2) filtering a dry cleaning solvent (3) contacting the garments or fabrics in the container with the filtered dry cleaning solvent in a first cleaning step (4) admixing water and a water-active cleaning agent with solvent removed from the container and circulating the solvent admixed with water and cleaning agent back to and through the container as a second cleaning step (5) after terminating the admixing of water and cleaning agent and carrying out step (4) for a desired period of time, again filtering the solvent and (6) flowing the filtered solvent from step (5) through the container for a desired period of time as a third cleaning step. The cleaning liquid is preferably perchloroethylene and the filter media, which have a pH of 9 to 10 are attapulgm clay, bentonite clay, magnesium silicate and diatomaceous earth. Water and ammonia may be added intermittently to the cleaning liquid. The cleaning liquid is passed through decolourizing media e.g. aluminium oxide, silica gel, activated carbon to remove soluble agents from the liquid that would otherwise deposit a colour stain on the garments.
