abstract | 1295585 Microporous membrane GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 19 April 1971 [13 May 1970] 9865/71 Heading B5B A microporous membrane wherein the pores increase progressively in size across the membrane thickness and wherein the porosity is provided by a network of interconnected micropores extending through a mass of polymer crystals interconnected in a network of the same polymer, is made by dissolving the polymer in a mixture of a relatively good and a relatively poor solvent, the "good" solvent being the more volatile and the solvents being miscible, casting the solution on to a flat surface and allowing partial desolvation to occur, followed by immersion in a leaching agent, which is a non-solvent for the polymer but is miscible with both solvents, whereby a membrane forms by coagulation, the membrane being removed and dried. The polymer is a polyarylene oxide, polycarbonate, polyalkyl methacrylate or polysulphone. The largest pore size may be 100 . The film may have on its least porous surface a thin, dense skin (e.g. 100 -10 Á thick), this being obtained by extending the desolvation period. Specified polymer-good solvent-poor solvent-leaching agent combinations are: polymethylmethacrylate-acetoneformamide-water; a copolymer of bisphenol A and dichlorodiphenylsulphone or a polycarbonate - chloroform - toluene - methanol; and polyxylylene oxide - chloroform - dichlorobenzene-methanol. |
