abstract 1294393 Modified carboxylic acid copolymer/ epoxy resin products DAINIPPON INK & CHEMICALS Inc and DAINIPPON INK INSTITUTE OF CHEMICAL RESEARCH 23 March 1970 [22 March 1969] 14030/70 Headings C3G and C3P A polymerizable composition comprising (A) a modified copolymer having a side chain containing an unsaturated bond, the copolymer being obtained from (a) an unsaturated epoxy resin obtained from 2 equivalents (calculated as epoxy equivalents) of a polyepoxy resin having to terminal epoxy groups and 0À6 to 1À5 equivalents (calculated as carboxylic acid equivalents) of a monocarboxylic unsaturated acid and (b) a copolymer obtained from 3 to 30 parts by weight of a carboxylic monomer and 97 to 70 parts of a comonomer, 0À1 to 3 equivalents (calculated as unsaturated bond equivalents) of (a) being present per 1000 parts of (b); and (B) a monomer copolymerizable with the unsaturated bond of the side chain of (A), the amount of (B) being at least 5% by weight of (A), is polymerized using ionizing radiation, an accelerated electron beam or a redox catalyst system. In examples, compositions are formed as follows: (1) (a) a 2- bis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) propane - epichlorohydrin resin reacted with methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate is reacted with (b) methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/methacrylic acid copolymer to yield copolymer (A), to which are added (B) methyl methacrylate and isobutyl methacrylate; (2) (a) an epichlorohydrin resin as in (1) reacted with acrylic acid is reacted with (b) styrene / isobutyl methacrylate / isobutyl acrylate / 2 - hydroxyethyl acrylate / itaconic acid copolymer to yield copolymer (A), to which are added (B) cyclohexyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate; (3) (a) the said epichlorohydrin resin reacted with methacrylic acid is reacted with (b) styrene/n-butyl acrylate/acrylic acid/methacrylic acid copolymer to yield (A), to which are added (B) isobutyl acrylate and ethylene glycol diacrylate; (4) (a) a 2 - bis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) propane / 2 - methyl epichlorohydrin resin reacted with methacrylic acid is reacted with (b) methyl methacrylate/ vinyl acetate / tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate / acrylic acid copolymer to yield (A) to which are added (B) methyl methacrylate and isobutyl methacrylate; (5) (a) the said 2-methyl epichlorohydrin resin reacted with (i) isophthalic acid and then (ii) acrylic acid, tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate and 2-ethoxyethyl methacrylate is reacted with (b) ethyl acrylate/ styrene/acrylic acid copolymer to yield (A) to which is added (B) methyl methacrylate; (6) (a) the said 2-methyl epichlorohydrin resin reacted with dehydrated castor oil fatty acids is reacted with component (a) of Example 1 and (b) copolymer (b) as in Example 1 to yield (A) to which are added (B) isobutyl methacrylate and 2-ethoxyethyl methacrylate; (7) (a) the said 2-methyl epichlorohydrin resin reacted with (i) isophthalic acid and then (ii) acrylic acid is reacted with (b) copolymer (b) as in Example 1 to yield (A) to which are added (B) 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, trimethylolpropane dimethacrylate and methacrylic acid. These compositions are applied to steel plates and polymerized using an accelerated electron beam. An enamel obtained by adding TiO 2 and a phthalocyanin pigment to the composition of Example 2, or TiO 2 and carbon black to the composition of Example 1, is polymerized similarly.
