titleOfInvention Processes for preparing graft polymers
abstract 1293418 Graft polymerization process FURUKAWA ELECTRIC CO Ltd 29 Oct 1970 [29 Oct 1969] 51347/70 Heading C3G An organic polymer is grafted by a process in which (a) radicals are formed in or on the surface of the polymer (b) said radical-bearing polymer is contacted with an ozone-containing fluid and (c) the ozone-treated polymer is contacted with a monomer. Stages (a) and (b) may be carried out simultaneously. Procedures employed in step (a) are treatment with ultrasonics or impregnation and decomposition of a radical generating agent in the polymer. The polymerization of the said monomer may be carried out in the presence of an amino compound, for instance by contacting the ozonetreated polymer with such a compound prior to or during contact with the monomer. In the examples, (i) polyethylene yarn is immersed in acetic acid, treated with ultrasonic waves and then with an ozone-oxygen stream prior to being heated in an acrylic acid/nitrogen atmosphere; (ii) polypropylene filament immersed in xylene is treated with ultrasonic waves, dried, heated in an ozone-oxygen stream and then in a methyl methacrylate/ pyridine/nitrogen atmosphere; (iii) polyethylene and dicumyl peroxide are blended and moulded into a thin sheet, which is treated with an ozone-oxygen stream and heated in a methyl methacrylate/acetone solution; and (iv) polypropylene multifilaments are immersed in a benzoyl peroxide/benzene solution, heated in nitrogen, in an ozone-oxygen stream and then in an acrylic acid/dimethyl formamide/nitrogen atmosphere. The graft polymers obtained are dyed.
