titleOfInvention Polymeric 2,5,6-tricarboxylphenylene oxide
abstract 1293249 Polymers with carboxyl groups BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 13 March 1970 [15 March 1969] 12131/70 Heading C3R Polymers containing at least one of the groups and having at one end of the chain a group and at the other end a group are obtained by oxidizing poly (2,5,6-trialkylphenylene oxides) with chromic acid or with oxygen in the presence of cobalt salts. The carboxy polymers may be converted to anhydride polymers by elimination of water e.g. with acetic anhydride or dicyclohexyl carbodiimide. The polymers may be mixed with aromatic compounds containing two or more amino or hydroxyl or both amino and hydroxyl groups with or without solvents, and used to form coatings and shaped articles, the compositions being cured by heating. In examples poly (2,5,6-trimethylphenylene oxides) are oxidized with oxygen in the presence of cobalt acetate and with sulphuric acid and potassium bichromate; the resulting poly (tricarboxyphenylene oxides) are dissolved in m-cresol and the solution mixed with dihydroxybiphenylacetone and with p-phenylenediamine and used to form coatings on iron sheet and on glass to form films; poly (tricarboxyphenylene oxide) is reacted with acetic anhydride to form the polymer anhydride which is mixed with pphenylenediamine, with bisphenol A and with p,p<SP>1</SP>-diaminophenylene sulphide, and the compositions are heated and used to form coatings on metal sheets. Uses.-Coatings on metal, wood and textiles, wire enamels, insulators, impregnants for textiles and paper, and moulded articles.
