abstract | 1292888 Ethylene copolymer dispersions E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 26 May 1970 [23 May 1969] 25256/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division D1] Aqueous dispersions for impregnating textile materials to improve flame retardance comprise (1) 70 to 15 weight per cent of a copolymer of at least 30 weight per cent of ethylene and up to 70 weight per cent of at least one polar comonomer, (2) 30 to 85 weight per cent of a chlorinated paraffin wax containing more than 50 weight per cent of chlorine, based on the weight of (1) and (2), the chlorine content of (1) and (2) combined being 20 to 60 weight per cent, and (3) antimony trioxide, the weight ratio of antimony trioxide to chlorinated paraffin wax being 0À25:1 to 3:1. The ethylene copolymer may be derived from vinyl formate, acetate, propionate or butyrate; ethyl, isobutyl or #- hydroxyethyl acrylate; methyl or #-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate; acrylamide; vinyl alcohol; vinyl or vinylidene chloride; or acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic or maleic acid, or salts thereof. The compositions may also contain surface-active agents and other fire retardants, e.g. borates and phosphates. Examples describe compositions comprising antimony trioxide and chlorinated paraffin wax together with (1 to 3) ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers and (4) ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymer partially neutralized with sodium hydroxide, the dispersions being stabilized with (1 and 4) sodium lauryl sulphate and (2) dimerized wood rosin. |
