titleOfInvention Anisotropic organosilicon polymer membrane
abstract 1292782 Vinylsilane polymer membranes RHONE-POULENC SA 19 April 1971 [3 March 1970] 22257/71 Heading B5B [Also in Divisions B1 B2 and C3] An anisotropic membrane comprises a vinyl di- or triorganosilane polymer which has a dense layer of 0À01-10Á thickness, and a porous layer of up to 500Á thickness wherein the pores constitute 25-80% of the total membrane volume. The membrane is made by casting a ternary solution in two solvents whose boiling points differ by at least 30‹ C. and a non-solvent which boils above the more volatile solvent, allowing at least a part of the more volatile solvent to evaporate, contacting the east layer with a non-solvent and finally drying the resulting membrane. By "dense layer" is meant a layer which exhibits a selective permeability to gases not more than 10% different from that of a conventionally cast film, and by "porous layer" is meant a layer exhibiting no selective gas permeability. In examples a polymer of vinyltrimethylsilane, optionally copolymerized with vinyldimethylpropylsilane, is used. Solvents specified are aromatic hydrocarbons and aliphatic halocarbons. Non-solvents specified are water, alcohols and ketones. The membranes are useful in enriching one component of gas mixtures.
